Bae Smith at SFI worked on some visualizations along the lines of your 
plots for their working paper collection.¹  Even on that small 
collection just having a clean authority file (mappings of author 
variant names down to one) was a substantial amount of work.  

The data cleaning and various format conversions must be a rather 
menacing problem?
Can you pull the full text for the citations and do concordances and 
stuff like that? 
Would it be worth robo-trawling through ISI² or is that just a drop in 
the bucket?  (Was thinking it might be broader coverage.)
