One of the main uses of a VPN is to watch programming that is unavailable in your region. One simply transports through a VPN relay to where it is available. Unfortunately, it is usually detected and prohibited.
Another use for a VPN is to hide your identity when accessing a service. Like when reporting from a hostile region where you could be shot if your reporting was discovered.
It is simple to set up and use a VPN. It is a lot like dialing in with a modem, just an extra login step.
