The conclusion was the hardware is too old to support W10 so why don't I just buy a new laptop which might be a less expensive option. I took it home and installed Zoom. For all other purposes accessing applications via the browser should work. The only relevance of my experience is to resist buying a new computer unless there is no other less costly option.
