<p>I doubt that there will be lithium shortages long-term... as
there are many sources with more coming *and* energy storage and
electricity generation technology will continue to move fast...
though lithium mining/waste will be yet one more insult in a never
ending string of insults to "our mother" if you accept that
characterization of the earth/biosphere. Hydrogen as a
storage/transport medium, possibly transformed into Ammonia as a
"safer" carrier and catalytic fuel-cells are just a couple of
obvious alternatives (with all of their gotchas).<br>

<p>I think Musk is just preparing for the inevitable when our
"Mother" kicks us out and we need to go live with our "Warrior
Father" Mars...</p>
