I did some work with a couple of Ukranians maybe 6-8 years ago
who were phenomenally competent and motivated and clever. I got
the strong sense that "relaxed constraints" was a strong
accelerant for their capability/motivation. The project was
roughly designing no-rectangular LCD panels (and the video/GPU
hardware to drive them) to be used in a geodesic dome tiling.
Who knew Ukraine actually had their own LCD design/manufacturing
capability? I haven't been able to raise them since the current
nonsense started but mutual colleagues have heard that they were
"OK, considering"... Their offices are in Kiev... they are
likely doing advanced skunkworks resistance projects in their labs
right now... one is ethnically Russian but likely aligned with
his Ukrainian friends and colleagues (raised in Ukraine himself).

I gave the Russian a copy of Martin Cruz Smith's "Arkady Renko"
detective novel: Wolves eat
Dogs when he was visiting here around 2014. The conceit
behind the story and title is way to apt to today's events in that
region and the Russian/Soviet-Ukraine relations. FWIW, I believe
his mother or grandmother is Santa Clara Native and his father
Russian descent. You will recognize his more famous
novels/movies - Red Square/Gorky Park. He also wrote Stallion
Gate (story of Manhattan project from the perspective of a San
Ildefonso pueblo member as driver for Oppenheimer) and December 6
(story of the beginning of the Japanese-US theater war from the
perspective of a Gaijin young man raised IN Japan by his
missionary parents/friends).
