Is it just me or are machine learning startups now in a race to the bottom?

One I saw today on LinkedIn takes all of the digital footprint of an employee, which means all e-mail and all Slack messages as well as Github, Confluence, Trello, etc. and synthesizes it into a "skills picture".
Because of course the managers haven't a clue about the skills of the individual contributors.   Is this the world we want to live in?
