Computing distributional overlap out in the tails of high dimensional distributions…   Seems like it couldn’t possibly be sampled well enough to be informative.

PPS. Wrt the distinction between popularity and similarity, there is a sense to me that they both still aim to "point" at means, and this IMO, is part of the problem:
