As usual, you offer us good "hanging questions" to ponder.

Unless your ex-wife is acutely able in some way, it is highly unlikely 
that putting herself into the milieu is in any way helpful, no matter 
her intentions.  If she or you or someone in your circles live "nearby" 
in a context where *they* can be helpful to relieve the back-pressure of 
refugees and I suppose maybe "freedom fighters" on their way there, then 
that sounds like a good application of her resources/efforts.   The seat 
she wants to take up would be more well filled by a "military capable" 
volunteer.   But I suspect you already understand this and are asking 
rhetorically to encourage reflection on such things.

Your Ukrainian (Professional) in Moscow surely has options whilst still 
in Russia, some of them possibly *more* effective.   If he is ready to 
be cannon fodder anyway (throwing himself into the frontlines against 
overwhelming odds) I'm sure there are myriad "suicide missions" that 
would be more effective right there in Moscow.   With family and friends 
on the ground in Ukraine proper, it may well make sense to "go home and 
fight" to protect or reinforce them.   If he's a bit more measured, I 
think there must be equally measured throwdowns.  From what I see of the 
clamp-downs on protestors of all stripes,   an obvious thing to do is to 
support (harbor?) such folks, merely taking the *risk* of losing a 
lucrative career, maybe 15 years of liberty, or even life itself.   Same 
caveat as above...
