Title:  Can Large Language Models Understand?

Abstract:
There has recently been controversy about whether large language models can
be said to understand anything, to use language with meaning, and so on.
I'll address a few issues: (1) is sensory grounding required for meaning
and understanding? (2) are large language models just "stochastic parrots"
that lack world-models?  (3) what is understanding such that a large
language model might have or lack it?
