I confess I haven’t read this email carefully (I’m trying to work
through my email backlog), but this question reminds me of something I
read a long time ago, which is that the eye identifies straight line
because they are invariant under motions of the eye back and forth in a
single direction. That means that straight lines are the retinal
patterns that are invariant under a certain class of eye motions.
This works not only for lines but for straight edges. Only a skip and a
jump from there to Platonic solids. 😉
