I am chagrined (nod to Tom and his profession) to have been as cynical
about News as I have been in my life

Being seduced into voting for Reagan in my first presidential election
made my cynical about Politics which caused me to withdraw for over 2
decades (didn't want to encourage the bastards).   I worked in /Radio/
in my youth and came close to switching from /Private Investigation/ to
/Investigative Journalism/  in the late 70s... but saw that it might not
have been any more rightous than the PI work (patently not, even as I
tried hard not to be unrighteous).

In my newly political era (circa 2000-today) I have become more
news-focused.  Some of it is having more time (faux/semi-retirement?)
and some of it is letting broadcast media into my eyes and ears (until
mid 2010s) which I mostly avoided (limited to occasional hourly news or
a Democracy Now! episode on radio).   Now I probably watch several hours
a day cumulative over the day...   read a few dozen short-form things,
maybe a few longer (1/2 hour) things.

In any case, I now highly value the "good" sources when/where/if I can
find and recognize them....  it is harder than ever (with so many
choices and so much sophisticated sophistry afoot?) but it feels more
important than ever.

Glad to see what is happening at ASU giving local news some safe harbor
in transition...   I feel like we are in a socio-political phase shift
similar to that going into the Cenozoic?

mumble,

  -Steve

PS> EricS monolog was very well articulated and full of useful and
subtle observations... thanks for that!
