*During his talk, Szostak debunked several theories of life formation
including deep-sea hydrothermal vents and meteorite chemistry. Instead, he
proposed that impact craters and volcanic regions may have provided the
right conditions – through heat, mineral interactions and ultraviolet light
– to concentrate cyanide, which turns out to be a great building material
for the creation of simple sugars, amino acids and even nucleotides.*
