[FRIAM] New philosophy book

Well, maybe this is a result of my behavioral turn *back* into an introvert mode whereby I've drastically lowered the frequency with which I ping "friends". But I've come to think we would do well with some sort of "heartbeat" signal.

During a recent rootkit scare, I spent some time in wireshark and you can't help but wonder at the very *thirsty* need for all these machines and processes to reach out and check on their tribe. For the most part, the friends I grew up with are peri-oldskool. Absent the signal, you simply assume they're fine. They have nothing to say and when they do have something to say, you'll hear from them. But they've started dying off. That friend who didn't respond to the last email ... maybe they're dead? ... they were never very healthy to begin with. How would I know? It's not like I can remember their spouse's or their kids' names. Troll the newspapers for obits? Hire a PI?

What we need is a heartbeat. Those who have nothing to say but remain part of the constellation should send out periodic pings. Willpower and self-restraint be damned.
