The doctor who helped to defeat smallpox explains what's coming: either enough people get the disease and become immune, or a vaccine is developed to help us become immune. Both would stop the virus. https://www.wired.com/story/coronavirus-interview-larry-brilliant-smallpox-epidemiologist/Labs around the world are working on a vaccine, for example the Baric Lab in North Carolina and the Denison Lab in Tennessee.
