So if they fix the tuition waivers then they can vote for the tax bill?

No, these waivers are extremely common for PhDs, who are still "paying"
tuition, but it comes out of the PIs grant.

I don't know how many students would really want to TA if they didn't have
to..... Additionally, the issue would be that government agencies wouldn't
want to fund "scholarships" out of private grants. Thus, this would mean
that grant money wouldn't be flowing into the Universities. I don't know
where we end up if this passes, because none of these alternatives are
particularly great for science.

Essentially, even though my grant is paying for my students' tuition, they
are currently not paying income tax. This is slightly different than the
TAs, where their tuition is paid for by the university. But in all cases,
tuition is paying paid and not counted as income for the student.

A scholarship, for taxes purposes, is being treated the same right now. If
this passes, it will still not be taxed. However, there is no mechanism by
which PIs can fund scholarships with our research grants.

URGENT: fellow graduate students and allies: I have a favor to ask of you.
As you may know the new tax reform bill has passed in the house and a vote
is expected next week in the Senate. This bill will tax tuition waivers as
income, impoverishing graduate students like myself. Many of our taxes will
go up 300% or more.

This tax plan will absolutely be detrimental to US scientific research. I
have been working with members of the graduate student Senate at UW and
here is our call to action: On Thanksgiving, I am asking each of you to
share a video of yourself or a statement on your social media accounts
talking about why you are thankful for graduate tuition waivers and tax
credits and/or why this matters. I will be making a statement myself.
Please use the hashtag #reworkthereform Here in Washington we will be
tagging House members:

■ Herrera Beutler (WA-03)
■ Newhouse (WA-04)
■ McMorris Rodgers (WA-05)
■ Reichert (WA-08)

Students in other states please tag your representatives!

Please share this with as many fellow students faculty staff and supporters
in your network as possible!!
