In *Moon as a Harsh Mistress* by Robert Heinlein, they threw rocks, literally moon rocks with iron bands around them, so they could accelerated like a rail gun, small retro rockets attached allowed adjustment of orbit and eventually of target.  Blast effect akin to small nuclear bomb, but no radiation. An asteroid strike.
