I doubt that there will be lithium shortages long-term...  as there are 
many sources with more coming *and* energy storage and electricity 
generation technology will continue to move fast... though lithium 
mining/waste will be yet one more insult in a never ending string of 
insults to "our mother" if you accept that characterization of the 
earth/biosphere.   Hydrogen as a storage/transport medium, possibly 
transformed into Ammonia as a "safer" carrier and catalytic fuel-cells 
are just a couple of obvious alternatives (with all of their gotchas).

I think Musk is just preparing for the inevitable when our "Mother" 
kicks us out and we need to go live with our "Warrior Father" Mars...

It's not to late to get in on the land-rush... looks like it is going

And it looks like lithium might be quite abundant there!
